In the early years of the 21st century, the Netherlands faced many challenges. Economic crises, political instability, and a growing sense of nostalgia for the country’s golden age led to renewed interest in the history of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). In this context, Jan Peter Balkenende, former Prime Minister of the Netherlands, decided to revive the VOC. In 2024, the VOC was reestablished with the goal of making the Netherlands a prominent player on the world stage once again.

### The Resurrection of the VOC

Under Balkenende’s leadership, the new VOC began with an aggressive strategy of economic and technological investments. They placed a particular emphasis on space technologies, anticipating the emerging possibilities of space as a new domain for trade and expansion. This vision proved to be especially foresighted.

### The Breakthrough of RSI

On May 3rd, 2075, a historic milestone in space technology was reached. Dr. Scott Childress and his team at RSI (Roberts Space Industries) completed the first self-sustaining quantum drive engine, capable of achieving 1/100th the speed of light. This breakthrough opened the doors to interstellar travel and commerce. The reestablished VOC, always on the lookout for innovative opportunities, immediately saw the potential and invested heavily in RSI.

### The Birth of the Intergalactic VOC

In 2140, RSI released the first commercial starship, the “Zeus Short-Range Explorer”. This ship made it possible to establish economically viable trade routes between different star systems. The VOC, by then grown into a giant in the field of space trade, transformed itself into the Intergalactic VOC (INTERVOC). With a fleet of Zeus-class ships, the INTERVOC embarked on an ambitious program of interstellar trade and exploration.

### The Great Expansion

The centuries that followed saw the INTERVOC grow into one of the most powerful commercial entities in the Milky Way. The INTERVOC established trade routes and colonies in countless systems, from the Sol system to the far reaches of the galaxy. In 2954, the INTERVOC set its sights on the Stanton and Pyro systems. ### Stanton and Pyro

The Stanton system, known for its prosperous and technologically advanced worlds, was an attractive target for the INTERVOC. With aggressive investments and diplomatic maneuvers, the INTERVOC tried to gain a foothold in Stanton’s complex political and economic structures. Simultaneously, the Pyro system, notorious for its pirates and lawlessness, presented a different kind of challenge. But where others saw chaos, the INTERVOC saw opportunities.
